Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Gardeners Crofton Park will carry out risk assessments for regular gardening tasks such as lawn care, hedge trimming, planting, clearance, and waste removal. Additional site-specific assessments will be undertaken where necessary, for example when working on steep slopes, near water, or in areas with restricted access.
From these assessments we will develop and apply safe systems of work. These may include:
Using appropriate tools and machinery for each task and site condition.
Ensuring guards and safety devices on equipment are in place and functional.
Planning lifting and manual handling tasks to reduce the risk of strain or injury.
Controlling slip, trip, and fall hazards, especially when surfaces are wet or uneven.
Implementing safe methods of working at height, including the use of suitable ladders or access equipment.
Use of Tools, Machinery, and Substances
All tools and machinery used by Gardeners Crofton Park will be maintained in safe working order. Pre-use checks will be carried out by staff and any defects reported immediately. Damaged or unsafe equipment will be taken out of service until repaired or replaced.
Where fuels, oils, and gardening chemicals are used, they will be stored, handled, and applied in accordance with manufacturer instructions and relevant regulations. Staff will receive training in the safe use of such substances and will use appropriate protective equipment.
Personal Protective Equipment
Personal protective equipment, such as safety footwear, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, and high-visibility clothing, will be provided where necessary. The type of protection will be determined through risk assessment and industry guidance.
Employees are required to take reasonable care of the equipment issued to them, to use it correctly, and to report any loss or damage so that it can be replaced or repaired promptly.
Public and Client Safety
Gardeners Crofton Park recognises its responsibility to safeguard clients, visitors, and members of the public while work is being carried out. Measures to protect others may include:
Planning work to minimise disruption and risk in shared or public areas.
Using warning signs or barriers where necessary to mark work zones.
Ensuring tools and materials are not left unattended in a way that could cause harm.
Managing vehicle movements and parking to maintain safe access routes.
Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, injuries, near misses, and dangerous occurrences must be reported to management as soon as reasonably practicable. Records will be kept and reviewed to identify patterns and opportunities for improvement.
Emergency procedures will be in place for first aid, fire, severe weather, and other foreseeable incidents related to gardening and outdoor work. Staff will be informed of relevant procedures and their roles in an emergency.

Gardeners Crofton Park is committed to providing appropriate health and safety training for all employees. This may include induction training, task-specific training, refresher courses, and toolbox talks.
Supervision levels will be appropriate to the experience of staff and the level of risk associated with the work. Health and safety information and updates will be communicated clearly, and staff are encouraged to raise any concerns or suggestions for improvement.
Monitoring, Review, and Policy Updates
This Health and Safety policy will be monitored on an ongoing basis and reviewed at regular intervals, or following significant changes to our operations, applicable legislation, or after any serious incident.
Gardeners Crofton Park is committed to continual improvement in health and safety performance. Changes to working practices, training, and equipment will be implemented where they can further reduce risk and support a safe working environment for everyone involved in our gardening services.
